Located in the western section of the Jianghan Road and Zhongshan Avenue Historical and Cultural District in Hankou, Chubao Place by MixC is one of Wuhan's significant urban regeneration initiatives. The site historically stood at the intersection of the former Chinese municipal district and the foreign concessions. Today, it occupies a transitional zone between the low-rise historical neighborhoods and the high-density contemporary city beyond.
Kokaistudios has been commissioned to lead the master planning, architecture, and interior design for the commercial plot of Chubao Place by MixC. Under the dual imperatives of historical preservation and academic rigor, the team has approached the project not merely from an urban design perspective but has also embedded scholarly research on historical context and regional identity into the design process.
The core design concept can be summarized as “Yanghang as the Frontage, Lifen as the Core”—a contemporary reinterpretation of Hankou's traditional urban typology, where commercial frontages faced the main thoroughfares while residential quarters lay within the blocks. This approach translates the city’s tangible fabric and way of life through a contemporary design language.
