How do you take a legendary coffee company with a brand deeply rooted in northern California and make it not only relevant in the city of Shanghai but make it a catalyst for the growth of a new generation of “Peetniks’? That was the question facing Kokaistudios when given the opportunity to design the first Peet’s store outside of the United States and we choose to follow the coffee and make its journey from bean to final product the central experience of the space all the while keeping the California vibe.

The 340 sq.m flagship is located on the ground-floor of a reconverted office tower on a leafy beautiful street in Shanghai and features both indoor and outdoor seating linked by a series of swing-up windows that create a strong al-fresco feel. The interiors are designed to create an immersive coffee experience and the space revolves around the large semi-circular main bar counter where customers can get an up-close view of the baristas at work backed by the open-view roaster area housing the large Probat equipment where the team prepare the beans fresh daily.Spreading out for the central bar the space is divided into both seating areas as well as more retail focused areas where beans and products are displayed. The seating areas are divided into a variety of banquette and individual seating areas with the main seating area featuring an expansive green wall that suffuses the space with a calm, fresh and relaxing feeling reminiscent of the coffee plantations from which Peet’s sources its beans.
